Laurie Williams’s SATB reharmonization of The Star Spangled Banner
The National Anthem of The United States of America
Text is verse 1 of Defence of Fort M’Henry, written in 1814 for this melody by Francis Scott Key, American, 1780-1843.
Melody is the well known modern simplified version of To Anacreon in Heaven, c 1767, by John Stafford Smith, English, 1750-1836.
(Later note – Smith may not be the composer of this melody as is widely assumed. If that assumption is wrong, it may have resulted from the presence of his arrangement of the melody in a group of pieces published by him. The melody may have been in common use in England before that publication. Any information about this would be appreciated, via our contact page.)
Reharmonization by Laurie Williams, 2000, for The Old Scholars’ Choir.
Key is A flat, for approximately optimal range for adult voices singing the melody.
